About Home Solar Wiz

Home Solar Wiz is an independent site, built by a group of UK-based solar enthusiasts, to help UK homeowners make more informed decisions about solar panels, battery storage, and home energy.

Why it exists

There is no shortage of information about solar. The problem is that most of it falls into one of three categories: oversimplified to the point of being useless, too technical for anyone without an engineering background, or written primarily to generate leads for an installer. None of those serves a homeowner who simply wants to understand what makes sense for their own home.

The question most people are trying to answer is a practical one: given my electricity usage, my roof, and my budget, is solar worth it and if so, what kind of system should I be looking at? Getting a clear answer to that question is harder than it should be.

Home Solar Wiz exists to make it easier.

Independent and data-driven

This site has no affiliation with any installer, manufacturer, or energy supplier. The tools and guides are not written to sell anything. There are no sponsored results, no affiliate arrangements with equipment providers, and no financial incentive to push you toward any particular system or product.

The aim is to provide useful, realistic estimates rather than optimistic projections. That means modelling how energy is actually used in a typical household across the day, accounting for the real-world limits of solar generation in the UK climate, and being honest about the trade-offs between system size, battery storage, and the cost of installation.

Many solar calculators assume ideal conditions; perfect self-consumption, flawless battery behaviour, and consistently sunny days. Real homes are messier than that. The tools here try to reflect that honestly.

What you will find here

The site brings together interactive calculators, practical guides, and honest analysis all focused on the specific conditions facing UK homeowners. That means using current Ofgem rates, UK-specific solar generation data, MCS installation standards, and real-world pricing rather than figures drawn from other markets.

The guides are written for people who are not solar experts. The calculators are built to give you a useful answer even if you only know your rough electricity bill and which way your roof faces. If a result needs context to be meaningful, that context is provided alongside it.

The goal

To give you a clearer picture of what is possible and what is not before you spend any money. Not every home is a great candidate for solar. Not every battery pays for itself. The goal of this site is to help you work out which side of that line you are on, with enough detail to have a more informed conversation with an installer when the time comes.
